Paul Whiteman was a Jazz bandleader who lead one of the most popular dance bands in the twenties. He combined symphonic music and Jazz to create his own unique style of music, and was known as the "King of Jazz" during his career.
Whiteman's band was known as 'Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra'. It was the most popular band of the 1920s and was substantially larger than other dance bands of the era; rather than having 6-10 band members, Whiteman had 35! He played the violin himself, and his mix of classical orchestra and jazz quickly spread through America.
Whiteman hosted several radio shows, and his immense popularity gave him an appearance in 7 movies.
Some of his major recordings are "Whispering", "The Japanese Sandman", and "My Mammy".
