Joe "King" Oliver
Joe "King" Oliver is one of the most important figures in early jazz. He was a Jazz cornet player and a Band leader. He was famous for his using mutes, derbies, bottles and cups to alter the sound of his cornet. King Oliver was also the mentor and tutor of Louis Armstrong. one famous quote from Louis was " if it had not been for Joe Oliver, jazz would not be what it is today "
King Oliver's music, like Crescent City Jazz, came mostly form plantations, churches, parades and "low-down, red-light district honky-tonks where the men blew hard until dawn and didnt go home for weeks". By 1922, Oliver was considered the King of Jazz in Chicago and he would perform at the Royal Gardens with his Creole Jazz Band.
He put together ragtime, marches and blues. His compatriot, Mutt Carey said; "Joe could make his horn sound like a Holy Roller meeting. His blue-based sound earned him a place in the pantheon of the early Jazz artists. With well rehearsal, a realzed, laid-back sound and the musical intent that drew young Louis Armstrong to his doorstep, it took him to the ends of the world.
Some of his most famous recordings include "Canal Street Blues", "Sweet Like This", and "Dipper Mouth Blues".
